Regulatory Compliance for Consumer Devices: An Industry-Driven Initiative (L11a)

“ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, but what YOU can do for your country”, it’s a famous quote known over the world. In a world where cyber threats are real, they have dire consequences for the economy and society in general. Where countries are “reacting” by passing regulatory compliance in order to incentivize manufacturers of IoT devices to take ownership of the problem. With a particular focus on the consumer IoT market as the market with a wider footprint. This has consequences as manufacturers now face challenges out of the nature of the fragmentation across those security regulatory compliance requirements worldwide. This talk addresses the response from the industry. The effort from a large community of security-minded manufacturers represented by the Connectivity Security Alliance (CSA), Product Security Working Group (PSWG), looking to address both, the problem of security and more importantly, the issue of fragmentation. Beyond acknowledging the issue of fragmentation as a natural inhibitor for adoption, particularly when many of those requirements are voluntary, the CSA PSWG brings a proposal to the market, and policymakers, addressing these issues in a scalable manner. Helping both industry and nations to address conformance with those regulatory requirements from RED, CRA, CSA, CSA CSL, and Executive Order 14028, among others.
